Does it bother you when people talk about their children and call them "my kid?" They don't specify their child's gender so you have to figure it out by context and they call him/her "my kid." It sounds almost like an insult to me... maybe I'm just weird.
In a plural context, it's not so bad. But if you are talking about one of your children, please refer to them as "my son" or "my daughter."
