"Where did the Articles of Faith come from? In March 1842 the Prophet Joseph Smith received a letter from Mr. Wentworth, a newspaper publisher in Chicago, Illinois, asking questions about the Church. As Joseph answered the letter, he was inspired to write thirteen statements that contain many of the beliefs of the Church. These statements became our Articles of Faith.
Later, in 1880, members at the October general conference of the Church voted to accept the Articles of Faith as scripture." (Karen Lofgreen)

Over the past few years I have been interspersing them through my blog posts with some of my own thoughts about each individual article... you can read those by clicking on the links below:

Article #12:
"We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law."
This might seem backwards, but even if the kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates are tyrannical we believe in creating positive change while upholding the laws of the day in whichever nation we live...the reason why this works is because most of what we believe is governed by natural laws anyway (for example, not murdering, stealing, coveting other people's wives (or husband's), loving unconditionally, etc). There are some things that remain simply unattainable if you live in certain countries (like being openly Mormon in China) simply because the laws don't permit religious groups to assemble in public groups...privately, it's okay...but all things in due time.
